Health and social security

Luxembourg’s health system is one of the best in the world. Health expenditure amounted to 6.1% of GDP in 2017, and the country is one of the highest spenders on health per capita among the OECD countries. Over 95% of inhabitants are covered by health insurance. The highly developed and efficient social security system provides benefits related to illness, workplace accidents and occupational diseases, as well as insurances related to maternity, old age, disability, survival, unemployment, nursing care, early retirement, guaranteed minimum wage and family benefits.

Multilingual education

Luxembourg’s cosmopolitan society is mirrored in the school system.

The University of Luxembourg has a distinctly international, multilingual and interdisciplinary character. Courses are taught in English, French and German, and bachelor students are required to spend one semester abroad.

Safety

Personal safety in Luxembourg is world-class. The country has been ranked as the 4th safest in the world for expats (2019 Inter-nations Expat Insider Survey), and Mercer’s 2019 Quality of Living City Ranking named the capital the safest city in the world for expats.

Immigration

All European Union citizens, as well as members of their family (who are also EU citizens) enjoy freedom of movement within the EU, giving them the right to work and reside in Luxembourg, subject to certain conditions.

People from elsewhere in the world, so-called third-country nationals, need a visa and a work permit to settle in Luxembourg. Simplified work permit procedures for qualified personnel from outside the EU have been put in place. The administrative one-stop shop Guichet.lu provides all information you will need including the steps, forms and conditions for work and residency in Luxembourg.

Transportation

The entire country is covered by an interconnected network of buses, trains and trams. Since 29 February 2020, Luxembourg is the first country in the world to offer free access to all public transport for residents and visitors.

Luxembourg has direct flights to around 50 destinations all over Europe and high-speed train connections to several major cities. The airport, which is located a mere 15 minute from the centre of the capital, is ranked by Blacklane as the fastest airport in the world in terms of the time needed for passengers to get from their seat on the plane to their seat in a car (15.5 minutes). Neighbouring countries are located less than half an hour away from the capital by train or car.

Sports and leisure

Despite its small size, Luxembourg is a very green country and the countryside is never far away. Diverse and unique landscapes are criss-crossed by several thousand kilometres of hiking and biking paths. You will also find a wide range of leisure and sports activities.

Luxembourg’s vibrant cultural life includes art, music, dance, theatre and much more performed by world-class artists. You can visit our UNESCO world heritage sites and the Hopping Procession of Echternach, which has its roots in medieval times. If you want to go for a relaxed meal out or a truly fine-dining experience, the choice is there. Luxembourg has the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita in the world.

Housing

Just like everywhere else, accommodation in Luxembourg can be found via property listings on specialised websites and in the local press, by contacting any of the numerous estate agents or seeking help from a relocation agency. The official Luxembourg web portal provides an overview of the steps to take to rent or buy property.
