Located between two of the biggest European consumer markets, Germany and France, Luxembourg is perfectly positioned to become a prime logistics hub in Europe for cross-border e-retailers shipping goods directly to EU consumers or setting up e-fulfilment centres here. Luxembourg’s multi-product specialisation strategy for the logistics sector focuses on certain types of products requiring specific handling and/or storage solutions. The airport is the 7th largest airfreight platform in Europe with air links to all continents. It offers:
- a GDP-certified Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Centre
- a temperature-controlled environment for perishable handling
- a dedicated live animal station
- a dedicated area for dangerous goods
- specialised outsize freight handling facilities
The country offers fast and easy procedures for import, transit and export including paperless customs procedures, simplified customs procedures with Authorised Economic Operator status and the possibility to appoint a fiscal representative.
Multimodal connections
Located at the junction of major North-South and East-West railway and motorway corridors, Luxembourg offers easy and uncongested rail and road access to the European consumer market. Reliable and scheduled combined rail connections are provided by CFL multimodal to Antwerp, Zeebrugge, Ghent (with ferry connections to the UK and Scandinavia), Lyon, Le Boulou, Barcelona, Trieste (with ferry connections to Turkey) and other EU hubs. A first direct train to China was launched in 2019.
A rail motorway service for standard unaccompanied semi-trailers connects Luxembourg to the South of France. The river port of Mertert offers services and warehousing related to tri-modal, waterway-oriented transport logistics to other inland and North Sea destinations.
Real estate solutions
The two Luxembourg logistics parks, Eurohub Centre and Eurohub South, provide real estate solutions (i.e. by building or renting warehouse facilities) within easy reach of the airport, the multimodal rail/road terminal and the inland river port. Both have direct access to major European motorways.
Logistics 4.0
Benefiting from the country’s top-notch digital infrastructure and expertise in handling and processing big data, the government aims at turning Luxembourg into a next-generation logistics 4.0 hub. Intelligent transport systems are in use for the rail, waterway and roadway networks. The sector can benefit from innovation funding schemes and cooperation with public research institutions.
