The sudden arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a general lack of medical equipment such as face masks, protective equipment for medical staff and ventilators. Steel giant ArcelorMittal is one of the many companies that have stepped in to make a contribution. The company has developed a first prototype for a 3D-printed ventilator, and is working on a second one.

Using 3D printing expertise

According to Luxembourg magazine Delano, the prototype has been developed by ArcelorMittal’s R&D team in Luxembourg. The prototype is about to be tested in hospitals. If the tests are conclusive, these ventilators could quickly be produced on a massive scale.

The company is now working on a second prototype for a ventilator that would not only provide oxygen to the lungs, but be able to feed medicine incorporating artificial intelligence algorithms.
