Webasto produces roofs, electric-cars chargers and batteries as well as heating and cooling systems for the automotive industry. High-tech glass serves as the technological foundation for new equipment features such as light effects, shading at the touch of a button or integrated solar cells in the roof system. The new production line will produce this type of smart glazing.

With this investment, Webasto will expand its current infrastructure area by approximately 13,000 m2 and modernise part of its existing facilities with state-of-the-art technology. As a result, the company will expand its capacity, achieve significant energy savings and increase its production efficiency.

Luxembourg competence centre for high-tech glass

The new production line will make it possible to manufacture large high-tech glass roofs for cars. “In the glass of these systems, innovative technologies such as switchable glazing, lighting, or solar cells are integrated. These new features in the glass make the roof of the vehicle an innovation platform,” explains Axel Berning, Managing Director of Webasto Luxembourg.

Luxembourg is a good place to be for the manufacturing of high-end products.

The investment in this new facility also means that Webasto is strengthening its Luxembourg operation as the group’s competence centre for high-tech glass. The completion of the new production line is planned for mid-2024, and the company expects to hire about 60 qualified employees.

“I think Luxembourg is a very good place for companies focusing on innovation and added value,” said Jan Henning Mehlfeldt, Executive Vice President Roof Europe at Webasto, when interviewed by Crossroads Magazine in 2022. “We have access to highly educated people, an attractive location in the centre of Europe and a government that is supportive of industry. Luxembourg is a good place to be for the manufacturing of high-end products.”
