Under the theme: “Architecture… housing for all”, World Architecture Day is being held this year on 7 October and coincides with the United Nations World Habitat Day.
Affordable housing is part of the new urban agenda and is one of the main objectives of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (number 11): “Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.”
The theme developed this year by the UIA (International Union of Architects) is in line with the concerns of the Ordre des Architectes et Ingénieurs-conseils and its nearly 1,800 members regarding a qualitative and controlled development of urban space in order to preserve social cohesion and ensure sustainable development.
The construction of an intelligent, sustainable and resilient living environment, combined with circular projects, are central elements of sustainability based on both innovation (recovery of raw materials and materials, high energy performance of buildings, etc.) and working methods (digitalisation).
Three clusters involved
During this event, three Luxinnovation cluster managers will be present.
- Charles-Albert Florentin, manager of the Luxembourg CleanTech Cluster, will discuss the theme of deconstruction. “The circular economy is relevant throughout the entire construction value chain, from building design and planning to construction, operation and deconstruction. On this last point, the implementation of physical and virtual platforms would make it possible to give new life to the products and materials resulting from selective deconstruction,” he explains.
- Philippe Genot, manager of the Luxembourg Wood Cluster, will then discuss regional value chains, particularly around the material wood. “The principles of the circular economy and related innovation approaches in construction companies concern both products/materials and manufacturing processes. I will, for example, highlight the importance of these value chains related to materials, but also show the opportunities and challenges related to digitalisation and ‘Industry 4.0’ prefabrication techniques.”
- Finally, Marc Lis will present “Design for Circularity” methods used to carry out cross-sectoral projects. “The primary purpose of design is to invent, improve and facilitate the use of an element that interacts with a product or service. The many design objectives pursued by creative people include meeting needs, solving problems, proposing new solutions and exploring opportunities to improve the quality of life of human beings,” he explains. “Today, industry needs sustainable solutions to meet a wide range of ecological challenges. Part of the answer lies in circular design, but this is a collective effort that requires the integration with other sectors and encourages the exchange of skills in order to achieve intelligent and sustainable solutions.”
