The EuroHPC is a joint EU initiative aimed at developing a world-class European high performance computing (HPC) ecosystem. Its headquarters will be located in Luxembourg. The initiative recently launched a call for proposals targeting the EU member states in order to obtain hosting offers for peta-scale supercomputers.

10 petaflops per second

Luxembourg submitted a proposal developed in collaboration between the Ministry of the Economy and LuxConnect. After an evaluation process, the proposal was selected, and Luxembourg will now receive European co-funding for setting up its own HPC.

The supercomputer will be installed at the LuxConnect datacentre in Bissen in central Luxembourg and be operational in 2020. It will have a capacity of 10 petaflops (or 10,000,000,000,000,000 computing operations) per second.

Data-driven innovation

“It is essential that we establish an independent European digital industry and a digital data value chain in the EU,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy Étienne Schneider. “The establishment of the European HPC network, in which Luxembourg will actively participate, is a crucial step in this direction.”

The Minister also pointed out that this initiative is well aligned with Luxembourg’s newly presented strategy for data-driven innovation. “We are supporting the digital transformation of priority economic sectors in order to develop a sustainable and trusted data economy.”
