Historically, the presence of a large and well-integrated Portuguese community in the Grand Duchy explains the exceptional closeness of Luxembourg-Portuguese relations. Read more about the bi-lateral relations between the two countries, shared history and culture on luxembourg.lu.

Focus on economic ties and mutual business opportunities

From 10th to 13th May several initiatives have been organised in parallel by the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, in close cooperation with the Ministry of the Economy and the Embassy of Luxembourg in Portugal. The economic part of the visit will be accompanied by H.E Franz Fayot, Minister of the Economy, H.E. Yuriko Backes, Minster of Finance and Mr Luc Frieden, President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, as well as a delegation of Luxembourg based companies.

Portugal has been able to make remarkable progress, particularly in the fields of digitalisation and green energy. The key areas of Space, ICT and Green Finance in particular have a very interesting potential for new Luxembourg-Portugal partnerships acting as a joint accelerator of the digital and green transition for both countries. The presence of a large young highly qualified Portuguese speaking population in Luxembourg, strongly linked between both countries, further strengthens the partnership between the 2 countries.

Luxembourg is recognised as a leading data economy with strengths in connectivity, data-processing capacity and cybersecurity. The country provides a comprehensive, supportive ecosystem where all parties, public and private, work hand in hand to help businesses innovate and grow nationally and internationally.

Luxembourg is firmly committed to supporting an economy that is both internationally competitive and long-term sustainable. A world-leading centre for green finance, the country is also the first EU member state to align and translate the twin goals of climate neutrality and leadership of the digital revolution into a single strategy.

The interest of Luxembourgish companies for Portugal is growing stronger every year. Despite consistent positive import/export growth between the two countries, there is still a lot of untapped collaboration potential in the fields of:

  • Finance
  • ICT
  • Space
  • Sustainability
  • Tourism
  • and many more…
